Bad Boy or Nice Guy?
I can tell in every detail when and where I read the first book of this series. Anna’s romantic exchange experience got me hooked and made me a fan of author Stephanie Perkins. Nevertheless, it took me several years to finally start this second book about Lola. Thanks God, we still get our sweet dose of St. Clair and Anna within this independent sequel. They immensely shaped my view on a first big love. Cricket was also Lola’s first crush, but he left her with nothing but pieces of her heart to kit. Though she’s quite trained with sewing, this one might not be fixable.

Lola as a character is already and sufficiently lighting up this story. She convinced me to love and admire her creativity within few chapters, but also reflects young people’s aim to prove themselves. She tries to balance this with not stepping on anybody’s feet – especially her dear fathers’. With her love for design and likeable, unique manner, she was an original and entertaining protagonist for sure.
Cricket is her equal in every way given how nice and courteous he is. Nevertheless, he left her in tears years ago so that she learned to move on with someone else. He needs to prove his trustworthiness to her and us alike. His kindness is pretty and quickly convincing though. They both have a touching history and a moving chemistry during these present chapters. Furthermore, they have their individual characters, traits, interests, and dislikes. They harmonize beautifully and make this book a wonderful reading experience.

Other characters drive the story but stay quite two-dimensional. Cricket’s sister and Lola’s best friend take part in the happenings but aren’t constructed that vividly. Therefore, the authors missed a shot. She also lacked advancing and using Lola’s boyfriend Max till very end: After several quite shaping scenes for him to gain substance, he is rather cut short at a certain point. Given the small scope of the book itself and the foreseeable outcome of the story, a loss of some good points was assumable.
Last words
Lola and cricket’s story convinced with its youthfulness and romance. A friends to lovers trope with immensely individual and, nevertheless, beautifully harmonizing protagonists who we simply have to fall in love with thanks to the rousing and at once easy writing style.

Ich weiß noch ganz genau, wann ich den ersten Band dieser Reihe gekauft und gelesen habe. Und ich habe ihn geliebt. Wirklich geliebt. Stephanie Perkins hat sich mit Anna und St. Clairs Geschichte in mein Gedächtnis und mein Herz geschrieben. Sie hat mir ein neues Verständnis von Liebe und Romantik und den ersten großen Gefühlen vermittelt. Einige Jahre später kehre ich also voller freudiger Erwartung zu ihr zurück und blicke einer weiteren wundervollen, romantischen und potentiell sehr emotionalen Geschichte entgegen. Und Lola und Crickets Geschichte ist genau das, wenn sie mich auch nicht wie erwartet vollkommen mitreißen konnte.
Lola und Cricket sind ein wundervoll harmonierendes Paar
Obwohl unsere früheren Protagonist*innen wieder auftauchen und ihre strahlenden Momente haben, kann Lola allein die Geschichte mit ihrem Licht erfüllen. Unsere Protagonistin überzeugt mich ab dem ersten Kapitel mit ihrem Wunsch, sich zu behaupten, sie selbst zu sein, ihren eigenen Weg zu gehen aber zugleich auch niemandem auf die Füße zu treten. Zudem liebe ich sie für ihren Modesinn und ihre ausgefallene, liebenswerte Art sich zu kleiden. Dieses Hobby, diese Leidenschaft können wir spüren und uns dank ihr noch mehr mit Lola anfreunden.
Noch umgänglicher ist wohl nur Cricket mit seinem Familienvermächtnis und seiner Nice Guy-Manier. Seit seinem ersten Auftritt verfallen wir ihm immer mehr und zweifeln bald nicht mehr an seinen guten Absichten. Auch er erhält ein bezauberndes Hobby, eine Faszination, die unsere Protagonist*innen verbindet wie ihre rührende, uns einnehmende Chemie. Doch während seine Gefühle für unsere Protagonistin schnell offensichtlich sind, muss Lola sich mit ihrer momentanen Beziehung auseinandersetzen. Dass Cricket sie vor einigen Jahren verletzt hat, gerät schnell in Vergessenheit. Für manche mag das übereilt wirken, ich jedoch kann ihre Wandlung aufgrund seiner offenen und herzlichen Art gut nachvollziehen.
Weitere Charaktere treiben die Handlung ebenfalls voran und verkomplizieren die eigentlich so einfache Wiedervereinigung.
Crickets Schwester bleibt leider lange Zeit über blass und auch von Lindsay, Lolas bester Freundin, sehen wir nicht einmal annähernd so viel wie von Anna und St. Clair. An ihnen hat die Autorin durchaus Potenzial vorbeiziehen lassen. Max, Lolas Freund zu Beginn des Buches, hat sie nicht bis zuletzt genutzt, wie ich finde. Er hat ein paar prägende Szenen, die ihm Materie verleihen, doch kurz vorm Ende übereilt Stephanie Perkins sein Zusammenspiel mit Lola, was ich bedauere. Doch gemessen an dem Umfang des Buches und dem unausweichlichen, vorhersehbaren, aber auch schönen Ende waren Abstriche für die moralische Auflösbarkeit der Dreiecksbeziehung zu erwarten.
Fazit
Lola und Crickets Geschichte besticht mit ihrer Jugendhaftigkeit und Romantik. Ein Friends to Lovers mit ganz individuellen und doch wundervoll harmonisierenden Protagonist*innen, die wir dank des leichten und doch packenden Schreibstils der Autorin einfach ins Herz schließen müssen.
