Covenant
This webtoon series has been with me for the last two years, renewing my love for graphic novels and comics. Although my imagination is diverse enough to visualize the written words I usually read, I love being amazed by the illustrating talent of artists like Lysandra Vuong. I reviewed the first volume of this series back in 2024, when it was first published as a printed book, then swallowed what would be the next two volumes on Webtoons. Only now was I reminded of getting back to Sunny and Ezra’s demonic adventure and—once more—was taken away for some hours by it.
New levels of evil
These final two volumes pick us up where we left our main characters before, with Sunny awaking in his power as a nephilim and unintentionally allowing the princes of hell to return to earth. With them unleashed, our exorcists have plenty of new challenges. At the same time, they are ripped apart by grief and unclear loyalties—a heartbreaking conflict within their own ranks. Moreover, they are disempowered by their superiors of the Roman church and must deal with supervision. All that while one of them, our very favorite Ezra, is trying to hide his love Sunny from their eyes and hands—and also save him from imploding due to his extraordinary powers.
Illustrated in stunning details
These final volumes pick up in speed and action. We have some captivating fights between our dear characters and demons, which makes us low-key fear for their life or at least their physical and mental integrity. We also get to explore some more back stories of our characters, which makes them more dimensional and us more attached to them. Above all, we get to see Sunny and Ezra grow closer, which makes us follow them to the darkest and most dangerous places in mind, illustrated in contrasting colors. Besides these obviously attractive characters, we also get to see beauty in their antagonists. Furthermore, with Sunny’s nature and some new allies, the lines between good and evil become more blurred.
In conclusion,
These two volumes visually and narratively expand our knowledge about LySandra Vuong’s created world and the characters within it. We have captivating fights and calmer moments that challenge us and the characters emotionally and eventually leave us with a massive cliffhanger.
