Reading anyone of Richelle Mead’s books is like coming home.
From early on, she establishes a fascinating urban fantasy setting. She also gives us a strong, witty female lead, and her some great friends to cope with the dramatic, life-threatening happenings. And there are a lot of them during each series. Georgina Kincaid is such a badass female with great friends and a tendency to be stalked, attacked, or simply caught up in her unattainable romantic goals. And that is, simply because she is a succubus doomed to suck the life out of those she gets too close to.
In this fifth installment of the series, Georgina needs to deal with rather personal difficulties.
I love her resilience and aim to not hurt anyone but herself. Coping with Maddie and Seth’s approaching marriage, she does not even use Ronan as a distraction. Trying to figuring out some immortal occurrences, she unfortunately finds herself far off from any interpersonal distractions – and contacts. Richelle Mead grants us a lot of insights into Georgina’s emotional past. We learn a lot about her losses and emotions during her immortal life. I enjoyed that a lot, but found myself rather questioning the circumstances of her imprisonment.
Over all, this fifth book sets up the presumably amazing finale.
There are a lot of questions unawnsered that make the happenings appear forced. The dreamt flashbacks Georgina encounters seem solely to be there to frame other dreamt scenes that allow us to follow developments out of her perception. Although I loved getting back together with our protagonist, her love interest, and most-importantly her friends, I did not enjoy the overall dynamic of this book’s plot. Nonetheless, the many questions and the muddle make me more excited to read the final book later this year. I am convinced that Richelle Mead will tie together all loose ends and finish this series as strong as all her others.
In conclusion
I’ve been back with Georgina, her endearing friends, and her dramatic, engaging life from the first page. Although generally enjoying the novel and loving all our characters‘ interactions, this book is the thus far weakest of the series. Nonetheless, I am sure the author will masterfully tie together all loose ends in the final one.
