[Review Copy] Realm of Fey 4: A Game of Monsters by Ben Alderson

The long-awaited conclusion in Ben Alderson’s bestselling Realm of Fey series…

As the dust settles and the world ushers in a new era of stability, only Robin Icethorn knows the truth. Duncan Rackley, former fey Hunter turned lover, has become the host of the demon god Duwar, and the gentle peace that has been brokered is steps away from being shaken up.

Bolstered with the sudden help of his ex-love Erix, Robin embarks on a mission to save Duncan, seeking out the aid of the Nephilim once more. However, Robin finds that the game of the gods is not over, and those he can trust may have other motives.

Determined to protect his love, Robin and his allies must band together once more in hopes to destroy their enemies and prevent war on a celestial scale. But as old feelings for Erix return, and chaos brews among the realms, will Robin be able to usher in peace in the world… and in his heart?

An Epic Conclusion

My history with Ben Alderson and his books only reaches back to 2024 and less than ten books, but I can name several wonderful instances of reading his works as much as meeting him in person that make me a big fan. Some of his books and series are easy to be read independently, like Prince of Endless Tides or Ben’s stand-alones like The Haunting of William Thorn. Others build onto each other like his Realm of Fey series or the Court of Broken Bonds series. Unfortunately, I still have not continued the latter yet, but the first one now came to a grand finale with A Game of Monsters.

Returning to the Realm of Fey

The third book of this series has left us with quite a cliffhanger, as one of our main characters is possessed by a dark power—meaning his life is hanging on a thread in more than one sense. So, Robin needs to leave his discomfort behind and take all the help he can get—from former lovers to abandoned friends to potentially not so trustworthy allies. His reunions are a massive part of the emotional load of this final book, as we feel his love and his aim to protect those he loves, especially when their situation becomes very dangerous. This book balances the action with deeper conversations and even deeper intimacy quite well, giving us highs and lows that engage us more and more with the final chapter of their story.

The complex final part of Robin’s story

I loved how we once more dived deeper into the history of our setting and the background stories of our individual characters, from Duncan’s family to the worldview on the powers who created the fey, humans, and Nephilim. Shocking revelations are followed by captivating decisions and consequences, rounded up with heart-felt conclusions. Loss and reunions made my heart race faster, as much as the continuous exploration of our main character’s relationship with his two loves. Overall, the book was well paced and engaging from early on, if you still can recall the characters and plot lines from the previous books.

Conclusion

In this final book of the series, we once more explore different places, battles, powers, revelations, and encounters of the good and bad kind—which all keep us on our toes. Our protagonist himself does not necessarily evolve a lot, but his life changes drastically through his decisions, sacrifices, and his allies’ support (and sadly also betrayals) for a peaceful union of all beings—humans, fey, and Nephilim. Action-packed and emotional from the beginning to the end.
