Love, love, so much love
After reading the series’ start last year, I couldn’t wait long to continue with Charlie and Nick’s story. The first comic book already got me hooked and deeply moved me. And every following volume made the story grow closer to my heart. Alice Oseman illustrates and tells of her characters and their lives in wonderful details. I get stuck with some pictures and enjoy finding the tiniest things in them.
Charlie and Nick are our beloved protagonists but hardly the only three-dimensional and interesting characters. Although comics do not offer that much space for several side stories, the author and illustrator shapes her minor characters in very individual and moving ways – and gives us more of them with every sequel. She also gives us daily events and problems next to the big moments which gives us even more insights into their values and ideals.
The story and important topics develop from each book to the next.
We get to know our characters closer and discover even deeper levels of them. After finding himself, Nick gets more secure in his relationship with Charlie. Their love grows stronger and helps them surpass difficulties, but also gives them reason to help each other. I loved how they were rather concerned about each other than themselves. Mental problems and coming-outs are issues of this story, but they are eased by romantic, charming, entertaining, and comedic scenes. I laughed as much as I felt tears gathering in my eyes.
I am excited to experience more of the author’s stories. Recently, I read Loveless but can’t wait to discover her other books. And I strongly anticipate the next chapter of Nick and Charlie’s story. Alice knows how to develop authentic characters even by solely make them utter few words through all the volumes. They are, nevertheless, interesting and attracting my interest for their own lives told in other books.

I devoured these three sequels like few others. Filled with emotions and love for details, they authentically tell of self-discovery, coming-out, mental health, strength, and friendship. It won’t take long until I reread this series. I highly recommend these comics and basically every story be this amazing, talented author.

Alice Oseman is an award-winning author, illustrator, and screenwriter, and was born in 1994 in Kent, England. She has written four YA contemporary novels about teenage disasters: Solitaire, Radio Silence, I Was Born for This, and Loveless. She is the creator of LGBTQ+ YA romance webcomic Heartstopper, which is now published in physical form by Hachette Children’s Group, and she is the writer, creator, and executive producer for the television adaptation of Heartstopper, which is set to be released on Netflix.
Alice’s first novel Solitaire was published when she was nineteen. Her YA novels have been nominated for the YA Book Prize, the Inky Awards, the Carnegie Medal, and the Goodreads Choice Awards. Q
Was ich zu sagen habe…
Nachdem ich Ende letzten Jahres den ersten Band zu dieser Comicreihe gestellt bekommen und gelesen habe, war mir klar, dass die anderen Bände nicht lange auf meine Aufmerksamkeit würden warten müssen. Band 1 hat mich bereits in seinen Bann geschlagen und tief gerührt, jedes weitere Volume sucht eine weitere, tiefgehendere Ebene meines Herzens auf.
Alice Oseman zeichnet ihre Charaktere und deren Leben in liebevollen Details. An manchen Seiten oder Bildern hing ich sekundenlang und genoss die Vielfalt auf und in ihnen. Charlie und Nick sind zwar die Protagonisten, jedoch nicht die einzigen vielfältigen Figuren. Obwohl der Platz begrenzt ist, entfaltet die Autorin und Künstlerin eine Vielfalt an Alltagssituationen, Problemen und Momenten. Mit jedem Band treten neue Figuren hinzu, die wir immer mehr ins Herz schließen.

In Band 2 befindet sich vor allem Nick noch in einer Selbstfindungsphase und seine Beziehung zu Charlie somit auf Messers Schneide. Doch diese Beziehung entwickelt sich weiter, wird enger, hilft ihnen durch einige unangenehme Situationen. Hinzu kommen Momente des Coming Outs sowie mentale Probleme, die sie gemeinsam auf die Probe stellen. Jedoch durchbricht die Autorin das tief an uns rührende Drama immer wieder für zärtliche, gar humorvolle Begebenheiten. Ich habe die Momente der Freude ebenso geliebt wie jene voller Tränen.
Ich freue mich auf jede weitere Geschichte der Autorin. Auch ihre anderen Werke, die nicht Charlie und Nick thematisieren, sind auf meiner Wunschliste gelandet. Besonders Tori, Charlies Schwester, hat sich in diesen Bänden als äußerst loyal und interessant herausgestellt. Ihren Zuspruch und ihre Treue wird hoffentlich in ihrer eigenen Geschichte erwidert. Die wunderbare Vielfalt an Charakteren ist nur ein Plus dieser Reihe, die ich sicherlich noch mehr als einmal rereaden werde.
Fazit
Nach Band 1 auf Deutsch wollte ich nicht länger auf die Übersetzungen warten und bin froh, dass ich mir die Folgebände von meinem besten Freund ausleihen konnte. Ich habe sie verschlungen und sie wiederum mich. Voller Gefühl und Liebe zum Details erzählen sie authentisch von Selbstfindung, Coming Out, mentalen Krankheiten, Stärke und Freundschaft. Und ganz viel Liebe!
